About Elliptical Trainers
Elliptical trainers represent the next wave of advancement in low-impact cardiovascular exercise machines and continue to grow in popularity. By simulating motions experienced through walking, stepping, cycling, and skiing, elliptical machines allow for a smooth and fluid motion while building strength in the arms and legs. Similar to the exercise position for treadmills, elliptical trainers are used by standing in an upright position while holding the handrails of the machine. With elliptical trainers, however, your feet remain in the foot pedals throughout the exercise regimen and circulate in a smooth and seamless motion, resulting in little to no impact on the knees, back, and hips.

Elliptical trainers are compatible for all ages and fitness levels and allow you to select the difficulty level through the incline and intensity settings. Additionally, elliptical trainers allow you to determine the complexity of your workout based on your needs, all while listening to music, watching television, or reading a magazine while exercising in the comfort and safety of your own home.

Although different types of elliptical trainers offer an assortment of features, many of them include an array of challenging programs, forward and reverse directional movement, EKG grip pulse handles, a lightweight portable design with easy fold-up capability, and a monitor displaying calories burned, distance, speed, time, and heart rate. Other types of exercise machines, namely treadmills and bikes, offer excellent cardiovascular exercise and muscular training for the legs in a forward-motion exercise. Elliptical trainers take this to the next level by offering an upper and lower body workout with dual motion, challenging and diverse programs, and a low-impact exercise machine that won't strain sensitive joints.

My wife and I decided it was time to start a low-impact exercise program, and had tried a Precor elliptical machine a friend owns. The Precor is a very nice unit; also very expensive and takes up a lot of space we didn't have to spare. We wanted something that would be convenient, fun, and compact enough to fit in our town home. I had previously owned a Schwinn Air-Dyne, and had no hesitation in selecting another Schwinn product. We've been using the 460 for 2 weeks, and we agree with all of the positive comments you will read here. I am 6'4", 220 lbs, and wear a size 13 shoe (the foot pads on the 460 measure approx. 13 1/2" long x 6" wide). When in use, it is extremely quiet but not "silent." The only sound I hear comes from the rollers as they travel along the track. I am an "over-builder" myself, and I am very happy with the solid build of this unit. Every piece of metal has the heft and strength of an industrial machine. With regard to lateral stability, the unit will wobble slightly if I lean way-out from center during a workout, but it never comes close to tipping over. As others mention, the touch screen display becomes somewhat obscured (due to my height), but I can still read all the data. We highly recommend the Schwinn 460.

This is my first Elliptical. I didn't know what to expect. I am impressed. Everything from start to finish was pleasant. It gives me a great workout. I can't do alot because of a back injury and out of shape. I think it is helping. I just do a little at a time. I am glad that I got it. Thanks.
Best value for the money

I was recommended this machine by a co-worker. I did my reserch, and for my use, a great value for the workout I'm looking for. The 460 is pretty easy to put together, but some parts are heavy and it would be easier with help of another person. I'm still learning the capabilities of the machine. But so far it is easy to use.
Makes Irritating noise

Unit works well, but is makes a very irritating noise. Sounds and feels like fly wheel inside base is rubbing at one point as it goes around.

Assembly was a bit awkward, best if use your own tools. The tools provided are very cheap and difficult to use. Note that the base where irritating noise comes from is pre-assembled, so not much you can do about it.

One Response to “Schwinn 460 Variable Stride Elliptical Trainer”

  1. The thing about a beginner is that they’re eager. This is both good and bad. It’s good because they’ll put full effort into things and learn as much as they can, it’s bad because their eagerness makes them impatient! Many’s the beginner who didn’t get dramatic results in the first month and gave up because of it.
